Huston is smart enough to keep the focus times on Hammond at all times, to his own eminently engaging performance, and to the deeply disturbing legacy of Lockerbie. A big movie beckons.
Although it serves handily as an anti-advert for self-developing photography, this wintry story is kind of a snooze.
[Huston] has a knack with actors, although the film is flat in places and more than a little bland.
At the film's best, [Huston] uses his dreamy, fragmented narrative approach to reflect the disjointed state of his protagonist, who's always slightly spacey, because the most important part of him is stuck in the past.
The film's real impact stems from the charismatic Huston's alternately tightly restrained and highly emotive performance that keeps you fully immersed in his character's emotional turmoil.
Although the story deals with emotionally wrenching themes, there is a coolness here which keeps us at arm's length.
