Movie Info

After the bank forecloses on Ellen McNulty's (Thelma Ritter) hamburger stand, she hitchhikes to visit her blue-collar son Val (John Lund) and his wealthy new wife Maggie (Gene Tierney). Arriving at their home on the evening of their first society party, Ellen is mistaken for the couple's maid; so as not to betray her son's humble origins in front of his moneyed new friends, she agrees to play along. Eventually the truth comes out, but not before Ellen proves that the size of one's bank account has nothing to do with the sharpness of one's wit. She also manages to charm her new daughter-in-law, alleviate her son's embarrassment over his beginnings, and make quite an impression on Val's employers.

A pleasant comedy featuring the immensely likeable Thelma Ritter as a hamburger-stand operator who gets mistaken for a servant when she arrives to attend her son's wedding to a lady of distinction.
