Critic Reviews for The Mission

The Mission feels too subversive to be noticed.
Bland and short on insight, Tania Anderson's debut feature offers a superficial look at young U.S. Mormons doing missionary service in Finland.

The Mission avoids any real introspection and never seeks to address [certain topics]. Anderson's film offers a curious peek behind the curtain, but anyone hoping for more than just a fleeting glimpse will likely be disappointed.
Anderson's incredible sensitivity lets personal epiphanies steadily accumulate in power, yielding a film in which the particulars of a religious practice may be fascinating, but the process of learning to have faith in oneself is even more compelling.
What makes "The Mission" so compelling is that Anderson doesn't take sides - this is neither a screed against religious neo-colonialism, as the church's detractors may put it, or a church-produced film about how wonderful missionary work is.
The Mission seems stuck in presenting the most conventional version of itself, even as interesting insights appear at the edges.
