As movies featuring bad drug trips go, it ranks with the most jarring. But it also uses that premise to craft a very funny and insightful story, and it would be a shame if you missed any of it.

The Wave is a fun enough way to watch one man piece together his bad times, when time has no meaning.

After a bumpy start, The Wave rolls into something far more engaging, even charming.

The Wave is never too eager to impress its audience. It creates a more inviting atmosphere that elaborates on some heady topics, while still never losing sight of being a goofy comedy. Overall, this a daring, sharp, and satisfying jolt to the system.

Though Klabin provides a suitable amount of exciting visuals, Long is fun to watch, and the third act is good, The Wave is barely a ride worth taking.

It's a movie designed to replicate the confusion of its protagonist, but ultimately reflects the confusion of everyone who made it.

There's little here we haven't seen fifteen years ago; think Donnie Darko meets Pineapple Express, and you've got a stew going.

[The screenplay] seems to be making up the rules as the movie progresses.

By the time a now lucid Frank finally acknowledges the cryptic messages that have been relentlessly swirling around him, "The Wave's" giddy effect comes crashing down where viewer involvement is concerned.

The Wave is two-thirds of a cool movie. The final third becomes didactic in a way that's disappointing in its predictability.

Klabin seems to be speaking directly to midnight movie fans, stoners who love hearing about other people's dreams, and Justin Long completists. Outside that particular demographic, this frenetic trip may wind up feeling more like an exhausting slog.

The artistry at work in The Wave isn't enough to keep the film from caving in under its middling story.

Instead of a kaleidoscopic journey into the mind, though, The Wave turns out to be more like a moralizing After School Special.

Gille Klabin's vividly rendered scenes of psychotropic freakouts prop up the been-there, ripped-that bong-hit philosophizing of Carl W. Lucas's screenplay. "The Wave" is never a bad trip per se -just one you wish would go a little more far out, man.

Like A Christmas Carol if that story involved a scummy lawyer cheating families out of life insurance policies, but with no holidays and plenty of heavy-handed morality lessons regarding the underclass and the upper class

[Gille Klabin] manages to rope in a breathtaking audio-visual representation of drug paranoia and dreamscape, but when it comes to complimenting it with a script that doesn't just try to be smarter than it actually is, he falters.
