Don't think too hard about the plot twists or the rules of Frank's universe, because it will all fall apart. Just buy the ticket, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

How much you enjoy The Wave will depend on your tolerance for smash cuts, wild detours, and the dismantling of previously established rules of time travel.

After a bumpy start, The Wave rolls into something far more engaging, even charming.

I'm not completely sure [the filmmakers] hoped for "deepness" anyway. This is a comedy of the stoner variety despite its philosophical quandaries and sci-fi underpinnings.

As movies featuring bad drug trips go, it ranks with the most jarring. But it also uses that premise to craft a very funny and insightful story, and it would be a shame if you missed any of it.

he Wave feels like a fresh, fun, and funky episode of The Twilight Zone.

"The Wave" feels tailor-made to spark shallow philosophical musings from stoners sitting on couches rather than offering real insight. Still, it's fun, doesn't overuse psychedelic visuals, and as a debut feature, shows off an inventive and peculiar eye.

A punchy and visually arresting calling card that announces the arrival of the filmmaker's bold style.

There's something calming about the hallucinogenic hysteria Gille Klabin sets in motion, even when Justin Long's face is covered with enough upper and downer residue to kill an adult gorilla.

A riff on A Christmas Carol in which Ebenezer Scrooge swallows The Red Pill is a good starting point for those readying to partake of Gille Klabin's trippy, challenging, wholly satisfying freak-out

It does have a certain energy at times to keep it going, with Long working hard to communicate the inner melt of a troubled man.

Starting as a drug-fueled, night-out-gone-wrong story, this clever little film soon turns into a metaphysical mystery that engages and intrigues with its vivid, offbeat characters and smart dialogue.

I found myself really impressed by this movie. It's a first feature and has a lot of ambition to it... You come out of this going "that movie is good, but that director is going to be great."

This fever dream feels more derivative than distinctive, entertaining and eventful as it is. Still, it's a well-cast, well-crafted stab at something offbeat...

It feels like an accomplished film - it certainly doesn't feel like a first film. Justin Long is perfect for this part.

Smash together bits of Martin Scorsese's "After Hours," Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and an episode of the old TV show "Scrubs"...and you might get "The Wave," an appealingly ambitious debut feature from director Gille Klabin.
