The Wedding Ringer (2015)

Critic Consensus: Kevin Hart and Josh Gad might be two great comedians that go great together, but there's little evidence of it on display in The Wedding Ringer.

Movie Info

Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is a loveable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: he has no best man. With less than two weeks to go until he marries the girl of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart), owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for socially challenged guys in need. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy. (c) Sony

The Wedding Ringer isn't innovative, but ultimately it's a crowd-pleasing movie.

March 7, 2017 | Full Review…

It's a ridiculous premise exploited poorly, settling instead for plenty of athlete cameos and countless astonished reaction shots.

March 24, 2015 | Full Review…

It manages to offend on so many levels that it's genuinely remarkable.

Puerile bromance ...

Hart is a very engaging and likeable comedian but this is only one of a number of absolute stinkers in which he has appeared in recent years.

February 20, 2015 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

Principally concerned with the indignities wrought on schlubby Josh Gad's gonads by, among other elements, chilli and hungry dogs.

Audience Reviews for The Wedding Ringer

Wasn't awful, but the cast didn't do much for me and the storyline was pretty predictable. I don't know, I'm not mad keen on weddings and movies about them (with very few exceptions), so maybe it would appeal more to others. Okay for a free watch on tv. I didn't really laugh at anything and a few things were mildly offensive but I guess I've seen worse comedies.

Predictable yet entertaining.

So much party and bullshit, and I mean that in the best way possible! A financially stable but friendship-challenged guy (who manages to put a ring on a hot blonde) enlists the ultimate, temporary friendship salesman. I'm not really familiar with Kevin Hart's stand-up, but he is rather excellent as Jimmy Callahan aka Bic Mitchum, the faux Best Man. He imbues all his toasts with off-the-cuff humor, crowd-pleasing meet-cutes, researched anecdotes, and unexpected poignancy. I want him as MY Best Man! Jimmy and Doug bonding through dance is hysterical, and the whole soundtrack is bumpin'. The septet of random groomsman is weird yet lovable, and Jimmy's flirtation with Alison, the bride's flinty sister (played by winsome Olivia Thirlby) is subtle and sweet. I was afraid Gretchen, the hot blonde, would just be a one-dimensional nice girl, but revealing her as a gold-digger is just as bad character development. Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting didn't really have any room to play with hot and bland, but maybe she could have played the gold-digger with a bit more sympathetic intention.
