Movie Info

This melodramatic film with its awkward title was originally a novel by Hall Caine, and then a stage play. It involves Mary Mac Neill (Katherine MacDonald), whose father (Theodore Roberts) marries her off to Lord Raa (Jack Holt) in order to satisfy an old grudge. But Mary wants nothing to do with the dissolute Lord and tells him so on their wedding night. So he takes his mistress, Alma Lier (Fritzi Brunette), to India and passes her off as Lady Raa, while Mary disappears to a French village, where she spends time with the man she loved all along, explorer Martin Conrad (Milton Sills). When her father finally tracks her down, she has had Conrad's baby, so he disowns her. Meanwhile, it is discovered that Alma is not really Lady Raa, so Lord Raa is kicked out of India. His income is halted, and Alma leaves him. Unable to earn an honest living, Mary is about to resort to the streets when Conrad finds her. With her divorce, they are reunited for good. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi

Critic Reviews for The Woman Thou Gavest Me

All Critics (1)

You cannot eat your cake and keep it; you cannot make your heroine a sympathy catcher through the miseries of indissoluble marriage and yet hand her her divorce on, so to speak, her wedding night.
