With an affection for nerd culture that is inversely proportional to its budget, this lo-fi sci-fi comedy is destined for laugh-filled late-night viewing.
an amateurish DIY love letter to, precisely, sci-fi DIY amateurism, and to those pioneering pre-CG days when fantasy adventures were evoked through threadbare mise en scène, cheap costumes, dodgy props, paper cutouts and stock sound effects.
Just as this desire to homage and parody at the same time provides the film's best moments, however, it also generates many of the worst.
[Writer-director Christian Nicolson] cheerfully turns his shortcomings into an advantage, or at least a joke, and if it gets tiresome along the way rouses itself for a likeable ending.
Made by fans for fans, Boulder is a fun space-romp that's well worth checking out.
There are so many fantastic moments it's hard to single some out.
