When the picture gets away from railroad procedure. Mr. Chaney seems admirable.

Chaney fans don't want him as a serio-comic, seml-heroic old-man. And fans of all kinds don't want marathon melodramas leading up to trick mechanical climaxes.

This Is a picture whose interest doesn't depend upon plot. It is a simple, straightforward story like The Big Parade and its interest is built upon evolution of details and characterization, plus spectacular shots.
Thunder has plenty of thrills and contains a greater human interest story than is usually the case with pictures that have a railroad background.
It should give fairly good satisfaction.
When the story sticks to railroading... it is about as captivating a picture as has come this way in many weeks. But when the narrative sets aside its oiling cans... it resolves itself as a not very stimulating account.
