Movie Info

Small town journalist Hannah (Rebecca Hall) has been struggling to write the biography of her late husband, an acclaimed musician with a devoted following, while taking refuge with quirky, protective Maine locals. But things change when she meets Andrew (Jason Sudeikis), a brash, smart-alecky New York academic with an obsession for tragic musicians and a different take on her husband. Though Hannah is skeptical of Andrew's motives, the unlikely pair strike up a deal to collaborate on the book, forcing them to confront truths about themselves and the possibility that the next chapter in their lives may involve each other.

Critic Reviews for Tumbledown

All Critics (37) | Top Critics (17)

This one rewards the viewer with a typically fine performance by Rebecca Hall and a revelatory one by Jason Sudeikis, whom we usually associate with comedy.

First-time director Sean Mewshaw and screenwriter Desi Van Til - they're married - have decided, intriguingly, to craft a movie about loss and letting go. And they've done so with uncommon humor and heart.

Tumbledown comes up light in the categories that matter most, miring a capable cast in a forced cable-knit folksiness familiar to anyone who has ever watched anything set in New England.

A contrived indie rom-com that has the distinction of making the charming Rebecca Hall and amusing Jason Sudeikis thoroughly unlikable.

Tumbledown is a sweetly poignant look at what it means to move on.

February 9, 2016 | Rating: B | Full Review…

Hall and Sudeikis circle around one another warily, erupting into defensiveness, shutting each other out, then letting each other back in. There's a rhythm to it. Mewshaw helps sustain that rhythm.

Audience Reviews for Tumbledown

A film about letting go and moving on which is well written and superbly acted by Hall and Sudeikis. It is slow moving but it's endgame is satisfying and proof that films without explosions can be entertaining. A nice date movie and it also features great supporting performances especially Blythe Danner and Richard Masur. 09-10-2016
