Like some forgotten, turn-of-the-millennium relic, director Cody Calahan's sweaty, desperate attempt at aping Craven feels about 20 years late to the party.

I enjoyed the look of this a lot, but it should have been better.

While Vicious Fun has its moments of riotous gore and a few well-earned scares, the comedy falls flat with an alarming consistency.

"Vicious?" Kind of, in a campy way. "Fun?" Never really gets there.

While the makers of Vicious Fun want you to award them points for being light, but also serious enough, their villains (and therefore their biggest ideas) simply aren't gross and/or woke enough to be memorable.

The picture should be a carnival ride, but Calahan isn't prepared to make something truly funny, keeping the effort wildly broad to invite a sense of fun that never fully arrives.

At the end of the day, this feels like a love letter to this time period of horror, and for those who grew up with the movies that inspired Vicious Fun, it may just remind them of all the potential this genre has for a bloody good time.

This sidestep into comedy horror is a bold one - because it's not easy to balance laughs and scares as competently as this - but it all works.

Cody Calahan's latest feature has the makings of a future cult favourite. It's fabulously bloody, gleefully self-aware, and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.

A grisly, often caustic comedy of errors which doesn't let up or slow down at any point.

An eighties party of blood, black humour, and dismemberments whose simple story is carried out with overflowing energy. [Full review in Spanish]

Violent, funny, and over the top, the movie lives up to its name from start to finish. Amazing soundtrack and practical effects that are reminiscent of a simpler time.

Calahan really knocks this one out of the park, assembling a fantastic ensemble cast who are more than capable of keeping up with the film's frenetic pace and relentless comedy.

Calahan hits his stride with a movie that is simultaneously shocking, surprising, and downright delightful. The concept is bonkers, the SFX are silly and over the top, and the soundtrack is fabulous.

A horror-comedy caper that lovingly sends up '80s genre tropes while never breaching egregious self-indulgence.

Vicious Fun is a greatly fun killer film with a twist that works perfectly. The performances work (like seriously, Robert Maillet in that part is just perfect) and the cast is on point throughout.
