There is a reason there are not many films like this. Vitalina Varela is so uncompromising and so concentrated that it threatens to absorb the projector beam...

The enduring paradox of Costa's work is that this setting has its own irresistible glamour, reminiscent of fashion photography; the people he films are his models.

Director Pedro Costa's film is stunning to behold.

If you can give two hours of your existence to a dark room and sincere thought, there's nothing more essential available right now.

The film, shot almost entirely at night by cinematographer Leonardo Sim§es, is breathtakingly beautiful...In one beautiful bit of alchemy, clothespins appear as raised praying hands over black cloaks which dance as Vitalina edges past them.

It feels strange to say that Vitalina Varela is a visually stunning film because what it depicts is an ugly failing of people. It's a film submerged in regret, remorse, anger, and in some ways a faint light of hope (but just faint).

In Vitalina Varela, we venture through the slums of Lisbon, where the locals shower in sewers and the camera bathes in darkness. It's a world where every ray of light grabs your attention; every frame recalls the silhouetted figures of Rembrandt.

Combines fiction and nonfiction to deliver a heartbreaking story that looks unlike anything you've ever seen.

This is a very artful, very methodical, slow and deliberately-paced look at the people of Cape Verde and their struggles.

A masterfully composed film.

Watching as Costa evades any kind of narrative artifice, we realize how daring the filmmaking is as a portrait of an all-enveloping mood.

Vitalina Varela is demanding, rewarding, and ineffably stirring.

It is a rich viewing experience during a period with a dearth of them, especially when the final image - ironic, jarring, and sad - is revealed.
