It was a roller coaster in the dark.

A postmodern mash-up of genres and aesthetic styles, Vivarium is a suburban horror story ideal for our capitalist - and pandemic - age.

... full of quirkiness and nihilism, yet it can't seem to settle on any particular point; in fact, it tries to embrace them all... misses the mark of anything coherent and settles upon weird for the sake of being weird.

A carefully constructed ride of anxiety, in which characters suffer under the voyeuristic eye of the audience and of society as a whole.

The question arises: is the movie's central thrust just an attention-grabbing gimmick? Probably.

This may not be the best time to release a feature about a couple trapped in a suburban nightmare, completely isolated from the rest of the world.

The film emphasises why our need for community should never come at the cost of conformity.

The underlying social commentary about parasitism, the shackles of domesticity and unplanned parenthood is provocative, while Senan Jennings delivers one of the creepiest child performances ever.

Senan Jennings proves a genius find as the ghoulish youngster who terrorises his adopted mum and dad. Not since The Omen's chubby-cheeked hellraiser has a kid come across so disturbing

The middle of the film has a very sluggish pace, but there's enough of the story to keep people interested to find out what happens in the end. Because so much of Vivarium is repetitive ... the movie probably would've been better as a short film.

The performances by Poots and Eisenberg are outstanding. They have great chemistry as a couple, and this makes the relationship not perfect but realistic.

A slightly above-average entry in the genre of moral-myth horror-comedies with heavy symbolism and a little more ambition than means of execution.

... don't come for the story or for spooks but plan to stay for style and finesse.

The movie is only around 100 minutes long, but it could stand to lose a few. More than anything, there's kind of an off-putting editing rhythm during scenes of dialogue,

VIVARIUM's version of an endurance test causes your mind to slip. For those dealing with cabin fever, you've been warned.

To say this is the ideal isolation horror movie for these confusing times would be a vast understatement.

Writer/director Lorcan Finnegan... has delivered a mostly pretty tasty and effective film that never quite gets to where you hope it might, but never really drops the ball completely either.

Lorcan Finnegan has established himself on the international scene as one of the most interesting fantastical filmmakers today. [Full review in Spanish]

An unusual Irish-Danish-American-Belgian co-production, Finnegan's film keeps you watching, if sometimes irritated, to see what happens...

It's at times baffling, but the surreal web Vivarium draws us into via exceptionally strong production design makes it easier to wave off narrative inconsistencies.
