There are touches of Tim Burton, Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry-style surrealism to the film's aesthetic but next-to-nothing going on underneath.

It leaves much to be desired in the end as it becomes a slog and seems it no longer knows what to do with itself about halfway through. The intrigue and fight for survival dissipate quite quickly, which results in a pretty disappointing ending.

There's not much here beyond the great setup, and it feels like this would be better suited for a Twilight Zone episode rather than stretched out into a feature-length film.

A thinly veiled metaphor about the fears of settling down and starting a family, 'Vivarium' allows its anxieties about moving to the suburbs to child rear manifest as a literal cage for the characters.

This may not be the best time to release a feature about a couple trapped in a suburban nightmare, completely isolated from the rest of the world.

"Vivarium" is a unique exercise in original storytelling, but it will likely have audiences feeling, among other things, defeated.

Vivarium is missing the aiming height that multiplies its mystery and peril into something captivating.

Has all the makings of a memorable episode of something larger -- but as a standalone film, it tends to sag beneath the weight of its concept and three-character claustrophobia.

What causes Vivarium to stumble is its many loose ends left hanging by the time the credits roll.

The movie is only around 100 minutes long, but it could stand to lose a few. More than anything, there's kind of an off-putting editing rhythm during scenes of dialogue,

It's an overlong Black Mirror episode that forgot what the audience is supposed to be afraid of. Yes, we all know suburbia is trite, but your film doesn't have to be as well.

By the end of the story, there is still the sense, 98 minutes later, that this has all made for an interesting 10 minutes of exposition, waiting for something greater.

The surface chills don't stick that well without a deeper story.

Unfortunately, though, Vivarium is a little one-note - finding itself with not entirely much to say beyond that initial observation.

Imogen Poots is a fine actress and goes to pieces rather brilliantly, and Jesse Eisenberg sucks the air out of every scene he's in, which may or may not be brilliant acting.

much like our protagonists, we feel like there's no way out of this metaphorically obvious cinematic hellhole

We're not mad at you, "Vivarium," we're just disappointed.

From my semi-quarantined perch, it feels like one very long, very overcooked joke - and I've choked on enough gags this past week and a half to last a lifetime.

Vivarium is an abstract dissection of mankind's obsessions with family-style entrapment, belabored by uninspired overtness.

Domesticity sucks the life out of everyone. But it's thin thematic reward for seeing the wheels behind this performer's eyes grind to a halt.
