Movie Info

"Way Off Broadway" is the story of five friends who, frustrated by the abrupt juxtaposition of being successful artists on the university level to poor struggling artists in New York City, take a crash course in life as they explore the dynamic of conflict in friendship involving sex, love, failure and betrayal. Darrin Michaels, a skilled playwright plagued with writer's block and relationship troubles, battles his fear of failure by briefly selling out his dreams of the theater for money and ambition. When he decides to follow his heart, he discovers a love that he has overlooked until the moment he almost loses it forever. Jay Green, a talented musician and ladies man, hides himself in a life of homelessness, promiscuity, and self-denial in efforts to avoid making the wrong decision. While he fights against his passion to play the guitar, he puts his heart on the line, only to find that maturity may be his link to his happiness. Film buff Mickey Cancoon, and the quirky Ethan Willard opt for graduate school as Mickey struggles to mend his broken heart and Ethan searches for the nerve to play his hand at love. Finally, Rebecca Moscowitz is the magnetic force, whose strength holds the group together. She is an aspiring actress whose revolutionary spirit comes up against cattle calls, misogynist directors, and a love that she has buried for too long. "Way Off Broadway" explores the relationships of these characters and the choices they make that threaten their friendships, sacrifice their dreams, and define their futures. -- © 2001 Just For Fun Films

They are an appealing, vulnerable group, and the film is a showcase for its gifted young actors.

March 18, 2005 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Despite the earnest predictability of all that occurs, the movie remains watchable thanks to the genuine comradeship one senses among the players, whose can-do spirit carries the movie along to its rather innocuous finale.

Looks and sounds very much like a sitcom.

June 4, 2004 | Rating: 1.5/4 | Full Review…

America's appetite for these yuppie-filled tales has worn down, but not soon enough to stop this collection of self-absorbed twentysomethings.

June 4, 2004 | Rating: 1/4

Despite the fact that it never seems particularly fresh, Way Off Broadway is consistently funny.

December 11, 2003 | Rating: 2.5/4

This movie wants you to like it, and it's easy to like. There's a warm fuzzy wrapped up in the too-quickly-and-easily-resolved ending, and in the end I was charmed enough to let the film win me over.
