Critic Reviews for Wichita
Daniel Ullman's script turns backroom political dealings into high drama; Tourneur's poised and lyrical direction elevates it to a sort of secular scripture.
Jacques Tourneur's first and best film in CinemaScope is also one of his strangest westerns.
A simple and entertaining Technicolor western that, through rich panoramas captured in CinemaScope, revisits the myth of Wyatt Earp with a good role from Joel McCrea. [Full review in Spanish]
Despite a collage of wide-angle shots scanning the open range, Wichita's first act feels strangely cramped, establishing the close proximity between Wyatt's sturdy stoicism and the cowboy's aimless volatility.
Audience Reviews for Wichita
bit of a run on westerns here. this lean and mean tourneur outing is the most badass i've ever seen from joel mccrea, playing wyatt earp (!) in no way historically accurate but who cares. tourneur's westerns are always a bit more complex than your average oater, see also 'canyon passage' and 'stranger on horseback'. gallop-by shootings and theme song by tex ritter
Ordinary western with cast of familiar faces.
