Woman in Gold (2015)

Critic Consensus: Woman in Gold benefits from its talented leads, but strong work from Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds isn't enough to overpower a disappointingly dull treatment of a fascinating true story.

Movie Info

WOMAN IN GOLD is the remarkable true story of one woman's journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt's famous painting 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I'. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way. Critic Reviews for Woman in Gold

It's an underdog story tailor-made for the movies, devoid of surprises but touching all the same.

It won't do the film any harm at the box office that Helen Mirren twinkles indomitably. She's as good as ever, but really - of all the things you want to see Dame Helen doing indomitably, twinkling isn't among them.

Helen Mirren is, of course, a wonderful actress, and she brings dignity to the marvellously Euro-chic Maria, but even she can't soar above the script which veers from speechifying to banalities.

Take a complex legal issue like the provenance of an art object, then throw in Helen Mirren and the Nazis as the hero and villains, and you have the dull and simplified tale of Woman in Gold.

Sometimes you know a movie is going to work in about the first three scenes. This one really works.

Mirren's performance gains in depth and pathos as the film progresses.

Audience Reviews for Woman in Gold

Despite Reynolds' strong performance, this film can't make up for the poor, unconvincing motivations of its characters; a structure that relies too much on usually haphazard flashbacks; Helen Mirren as a caricature of the "eccentric old lady;" and a sentimental ending.

I just cannot with dramatic Ryan Reynolds. I once described Kal Penn as being a good actor in comedic movies and even dramatic parts of comedic movies, but not a good actor in dramatic movies. I feel the same way about Reynolds, and they probably only have half a degree's worth of separation between themselves.

A by-the-numbers story about the effort to regain some priceless works of art from the Austrian government that had been stolen by that century's very bad bad guys, the Nazis. The leads, Mirren and Reynolds, are capably up to the task of storytelling but are not given a decent enough forum in which to work, leaving an overall dry work. The film's high point, the end sequence, is actually a steal from Cameron's Titanic end scene.
