The made-for-television film The Women of Brewster Place chronicles the lives of seven Black women who live in an inner-city tenement where they try to overcome poverty, racism, bad relationships and violence. The film succeeds because of the detailed script, and excellent performances from the cast, highlighted by Oprah Winfrey's first dramatic television role. The film was later developed into a weekly television drama.
