This late-career blip on the rugged CV of one of the great Hollywood actors is yours to gape at in sad disbelief through the barely-parted fingers you'll hold over your face.
The tinny laugh track has been turned up beyond bearing... The only good news is that Mitchum, who would seem to be a sitcom liability, turns out to be fairly spry.
Watching requires blanket disbelief and a high tolerance for heartstring tugging... [Robert Mitchum] looks as if he'd wandered onto the wrong sound stage and decided to hang around for kicks.
The rumpled Robert Mitchum, given one of the most preposterous assignments in television history, does what he can as the title character in this new NBC series... Still, the persuasiveness of Mitchum's performance makes it impossible to write this off.
One presumes Robert Mitchum is dozing through this sitcom for the dough; only such profound cynicism on Mitchum's part could possibly allow me to maintain my immense admiration for this great marble slab of a movie actor.
