While the lack of laughs in the first episode is a bit concerning, we think Bloods still has promise because of the ensemble that settles into a good rhythm almost immediately.
The similarly choice pairing of Lucy Punch and Julian Barratt helps fill out a solid little ensemble cast that keeps the chuckles coming even when local crack addicts strip the van bare.

Horrocks and Kayo make a delightful pairing, while Punch and Barrett excel at the comedy of cringe with their endlessly awkward exchanges. However, you're hardly likely to burst your stitches laughing in the back of this ambulance

In general, though, the tone works - the paramedics attend drugs overdoses and grisly road traffic accidents and the humour is just dark enough.

If (by halfway through, at least) Bloods remains patchily written, it is beginning to cohere and take on a charm and warmth that, with a bit of a punch-up to the script, could turn it into something well worth a weekly 22 minutes of your time.

As well as the fine ensemble performances, writers Nathan Bryon and Paul Dolan deserve special recognition for making Bloods even greater than the sum of its parts.
