Davis Rules is the type of show that could flounder about with no visible direction or it could jell into a tight, funny, well-done comedy. Though the point spread is close, smart money is moving toward floundering.

[Jonathan Winters'] few minutes of comic bizarreness scattered through each episode seem to belong in another show, and are not nearly enough to save this one.

The part gives Winters plenty of latitude for ad-libs, and his trademark flood-of-consciousness riffing still tickles. Quaid is a terrific foil -- warm, engaging and facile.

To watch and listen to Winters is to understand where Robin Williams came from, and to appreciate Winters` gifts. He's the ultimate man-child, and I envy the generation that will be encountering him for the first time.

A relaxed, ingratiating trifle with flashes of magical energy -- virtually all of those provided by series regular Jonathan Winters.

On Davis Rules, the 65-year-old Winters seems finally to have found the sitcom that will set him free. The show provides him with a good setting for his offbeat humor.
