Critic Consensus: With the introduction of Mycroft and Lestrade, Elementary successfully extends into the Sherlock Holmes canon in season two.

Tv Season Info

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), continues his modern-day sleuthing with trusty colleague Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) in London as Series 2 begins. Holmes receives a call from Scotland Yard asking for help to locate Sherlock's former colleague Inspector Lestrade (Sean Pertwee) who has gone missing. While working the case, Sherlock is shocked to learn that his estranged brother, Mycroft (Rhys Ifans), has moved into his old digs at 221B Baker Street and wants to mend their relationship. Back in New York City, the CEO of a financial consulting company is poisoned to death, and one of the suspects is a woman (Laura Benanti) from Sherlock's past who previously killed her father with nitroglycerine. As for Capt. Tommy Gregson (Aidan Quinn), his wife, Cheryl (Talia Balsam), is the victim of a home invasion from a masked gunman. During the probe, Gregson reveals a surprising secret about his personal life. Later, Holmes and Watson face their one-time adversary Moriarty (Natalie Dormer) when she is brought in as a consultant on a kidnapping case; and a surprise visit from Mycroft puts a strain on Holmes' relationship with Watson.

The payoff for the viewers lies less in the usual clever detective work than in the backstage glances at the real MO of the detectives.

One episode in London and an entire world sprung to life around Joan and Sherlock. A bustling, dense world that didn't just serve the closed-in plot, but also opened the door for return visits.

The One Percent Solution...was packed with something more important than ingenuity: wit.

It was great to see Gregson take pride in the work that he and Watson do and while he says he sticks his neck out, we never really get to see it first hand.

One thing I admire about Sherlock is that he doesn't really shirk a task once it is given to him.

In its second season, Elementary has tried to emphasize its serial aspects in big ways and small ones. "The One Percent Solution" is full of small continuity moments.

Audience Reviews for Elementary: Season 2

Holmes and Watson take their crime solving to the next level as Elementary enters into a second season. More of the Holmes canon is explored with story arcs that introduce Sherlock's brother Mycroft and his former Scotland Yard colleague Lestrade. And the crimes-of-the-week continue to deliver interesting cases that are full of intrigue. However, the show makes a major misstep in developing a romance between Watson and Mycroft. The actors have no chemistry together and the relationship feels completely contrived. Season 2 of Elementary stumbles a bit, but does a good job overall at building the series and its characters.
