Critic Consensus: Garry Shandling's impish sense of humor may not be all viewers' cup of tea, but he serves it hot during a telecast defined by a showdown between The Sopranos and The West Wing.

Critic Reviews for Emmys: 52nd Emmys
All Critics (11) | Top Critics (7) | Fresh (7) | Rotten (4)
Shandling's opening monologue had some amusing lines, but too many references to his sex life so early in the show.

Host Garry Shandling kept the proceedings lively, albeit sex-obsessed. Did anyone honestly expect otherwise? When you hire Shandling, you automatically get jokes about narcissism and his sex life.
In a hotly contested year, the Emmys themselves came off lukewarm onscreen.
Not only were most winners more worthy than usual, the show's host, Garry Shandling, also was a winner.
Speaking of a lack of energy, host Garry Shandling surely put some viewers to sleep with his I'm-so-depressed-I-can't-stand-it schtick... None of it was exactly scintillating.
All of these wins made host Shandling's weird "I'm not gay, really I'm not" shtick seem even weirder. Is Shandling consciously sending up hetero male sexual insecurity, or just being neurotic? On second thought, we don't want to know.
