Critic Consensus: Conan O'Brien does a heroic job in his debut as host, but he can't save a bloated 54th Emmys that is packed with glaring self-promotion from the telecast's host network, NBC.

Critic Reviews for Emmys: 54th Emmys
All Critics (14) | Top Critics (7) | Fresh (6) | Rotten (8)
All in all, an excellent night at the Emmys -- very little art and a lot of entertainment.

Yes, Conan O'Brien hosted a fast-paced ceremony that moved along smartly and was remarkable for an absence of long-winded tributes.
O'Brien never seemed to connect with the audience in any meaningful way.
As a first-time host for the TV industry's biggest event, O'Brien didn't exactly kill, but he remained consistently amusing with jokes that seemed one step removed for distance and irony.
Even with the middling success of O'Brien's hosting, the Emmy telecast was slightly less moribund than usual because of all the first-time winners.
[I want to thank] Conan O'Brien... for his easy, effortless wit in his new role as Emmys host, with an enormous assist from those who wrote one of the funniest opening monologues in Emmys history.
