The most important repeat was Ellen DeGeneres' return as host. She performed brilliantly four years ago... She was equally superb Sunday in overseeing the 57th annual ceremony.
Even if the early winners were an uninspiring lot, the Emmycast itself provided an enjoyable evening of entertainment.
If the last season was that unmemorable, TV's got a problem an Ellen DeGeneres monologue won't help.
Why is it that television can produce series so artful and brilliant that they make movies seem like a second or third option but, when it comes to putting on an awards show about said brilliance, all the electricity leaves the room?
A ho-hum affair that failed to deliver on officials' promises to be a more lively event, CBS presented a safe and uninspiring show that puttered along and got the job done with no sparks, planned or otherwise.
One of the more nearly entertaining and least irritating Emmycasts in memory.
