Host Jimmy Kimmel's approval ratings started off strong and then plummeted. The ABC late-night star opened the show in style. Then, somehow, he thought it would be a good idea to do a Bill Cosby-themed prank. Really?

The TV academy proved its superiority to the Oscars in terms of embracing new blood, people of color and strong women.

As the industry celebrated itself in a reasonably entertaining ceremony without too many gimmicks, gaffes, or upsets, it asserted that works of entertainment really can change the world.

The Emmys' newish commitment, apparent in the nominees, to behaving like someone who likes and watches a lot of television paid off in the ceremony by letting air into the room.

The overall impression of the speeches alone made the 2016 Emmys extraordinary, and, while such earnest candor and original voices can't be relied upon each year, the ceremony as a whole would continue to benefit from a similar brand of courage.
If there was a category for Efficient and Effective Awards Show, the 68th Annual Emmys would be a lock.
