Colbert had former Trump spokesman Sean Spicer zoom out on a mobile podium... It was a sickening, cynical laugh grab.

This year felt like it had one note it was determined to play, even when it had become deafening.
September 10, 2019
The old notion of television as a place where everything turns out safe and funny can be hazardous, as Colbert demonstrated when he brought out Sean Spicer.
September 10, 2019
Sean Spicer showed up, and it didn't feel OK anymore... Colbert popped the bubble he created. His opener built a safe space for the audience to have a good time, and then he invited reality inside immediately after locking the doors.

The audience at home and in the Microsoft Theater no doubt could have used a drink themselves. Save the bitters for Washington.

Sean Spicer made a surprise appearance at the Emmy Awards... The moment of shock was fleeting, and it came at a cost, namely the normalization of lies.
September 10, 2019
The Trump beat-down was predictable, but maybe not to this extent. And it ate away at the value of the awards themselves.

For me, last night did feel like a letdown: it made me feel angry and sad, frustrated by the limits of my favorite medium.

It was, all around, a really great performance for an Emmy host, and [Colbert] managed to keep from completely disappearing from the show when things started to run behind, which is tough to do.

Spicey took to the Emmys stage! And it was weird and kinda awesome... I've gotta say, I prefer seeing him in this capacity than in his previous line of work.
September 10, 2019
Almost everything about the Emmys tribute to the celebs who've recently passed away was extremely classy and well done... It was simple and poignant, which is the best you can hope for.
September 10, 2019
With a rare finger on the cultural pulse, the Emmys this year gave audiences exactly what they wanted... Smart Trump roasting, pleas for action and change, a celebration of inclusion, and, most of all, a warm, joyous diversion from the chaos in the world.

Just as TV is finding new energy outside conventional forms, winners outside the Best Drama and Comedy fields gave the show the charge its host couldn't find.

And it was quite a night for the satire-embracing and politically motivated Late Show host, who made an indelible mark on the yearly telecast. Your mileage may vary, but we were quite impressed with him, as well as all of the winners.
