Emmys: 69th Emmys Reviews

October 30, 2019
Apple TV+ hits the ground running with a timely, intelligent #MeToo drama that's refreshingly unpredictable, provides food for thought and, crucially, maintains a sense of humour throughout.

It's not often you can say a three-hour awards show didn't drag on, boring the viewing audience into a stupor of annoyance.
September 10, 2019
The old notion of television as a place where everything turns out safe and funny can be hazardous, as Colbert demonstrated when he brought out Sean Spicer.

The Emmy powers-that-be knew exactly what they were doing when they chose Stephen Colbert to host this year... Hope to see you again next year, Stephen.

Almost everything about the Emmys tribute to the celebs who've recently passed away was extremely classy and well done... It was simple and poignant, which is the best you can hope for.

For me, last night did feel like a letdown: it made me feel angry and sad, frustrated by the limits of my favorite medium.
September 10, 2019
For once, much of the banter between presenters was actually witty and not cringe-worthy.
September 10, 2019
Colbert kept the ceremony from indulging too deeply in its own self-satisfaction.

Once the awards show got going -- once Colbert and the hammy Billy Crystalite parodies disappeared -- it was a delight! There were soft sweeps in each category, lending the night a sense of triple momentum.
September 10, 2019
Colbert fulfilled expectations beautifully, during his brisk, sharp opening monologue and his shorter gags later in the show.
September 10, 2019
The Trump beat-down was predictable, but maybe not to this extent. And it ate away at the value of the awards themselves.
September 10, 2019
The quality of the winners, so many for the first time, kept the show moving along nicely, as did Colbert's extremely capable hosting.
September 10, 2019
Colbert had former Trump spokesman Sean Spicer zoom out on a mobile podium... It was a sickening, cynical laugh grab.

Look at the winners list: There's simply not much there to grouse about. And host Stephen Colbert skillfully brought viewers to a place that was witty and sleek; occasionally slow but more often sincere.
September 10, 2019
Just as TV is finding new energy outside conventional forms, winners outside the Best Drama and Comedy fields gave the show the charge its host couldn't find.
September 10, 2019
[Colbert] knows how to be silly and still stay smart... His hosting performance, assisted by Trump as an unseen presence, clearly made him a winner.
September 10, 2019
It was, all around, a really great performance for an Emmy host, and [Colbert] managed to keep from completely disappearing from the show when things started to run behind, which is tough to do.
September 10, 2019
It was the first Emmy night in a long time (maybe ever) in which everything that was nominated seemed more than deserving. Some losses were difficult to process, but the fact remains, we've probably never had it so good.
September 10, 2019
Colbert's Emmy show was, not surprisingly, genial, pointed, exuberant, just a little bit outrageous and marked by a kind of bemused patience with the vanities of Hollywood that did not exempt the host.
September 10, 2019
References to Mr. Trump were plentiful and pointed but contained, delivered with more steadfastness and polish than outrage. He was more a subject than a target.
September 10, 2019
Whatever the president's opinion, an empty-handed Colbert, and the Emmys overall, mostly looked like winners.
September 10, 2019
Sean Spicer showed up, and it didn't feel OK anymore... Colbert popped the bubble he created. His opener built a safe space for the audience to have a good time, and then he invited reality inside immediately after locking the doors.

Overall, Colbert gave an impressive performance that suggests he may have a future in singing, dancing and acting -- if the late-night thing doesn't work out.

In general, it was a good Emmys telecast and, like most of the best awards shows, it wasn't forced into being entertaining by its host or the show producers.
