Critic Consensus: Try as they might, the 73rd Emmys simply couldn't find their footing in a flat, strangely directed ceremony that let everyone involved down.

The in-personness of the night felt like a gift... It nonetheless felt like a true gathering, and in some ways the intimacy was preferable to a full theater. So there was that.

For all of the Emmys' efforts to attract eyeballs, the show still kept the audience at a remove.

Why am I watching an extended bit with Scott Bakula, Jason Alexander, and Dr. Fucking Phil about long-suffering Emmy losers (all of which were white), when there are so many more prescient Emmy losers I'd love to hear from at the ceremony?
The show may have announced that, after last year's Zoom session, the Emmys are "back, baby." But the ratings will probably demonstrate that the audience didn't rejoin them, for good reason.
Frankly, it is exhausting to continue to think about the lack of diversity in the winners of awards season, because it's exhausting to be disappointed year after year.
No comedy would have been better than comedy this bad. Amy Poehler was all of us when she quipped toward the end of the three-hour slog, "What time is it, and how do we get out of here?"
