Great Canal Journeys - Season 10, Episode 4 - Rotten Tomatoes

The British Isles

Episode Info

For Timothy West and Prunella Scales, the canals of the north of England are some of the best examples of the golden age of the waterways, where industry and barges worked hand in hand. This special programme looks back at some of their best moments across Lancashire and Yorkshire, where the beauty of nature sits alongside the empty factories and mills of the industrial age. There's the Rochdale Canal, once the lifeblood of the textile industry; the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a waterway firmly in the record books as the longest length with the longest construction time; and the Lancaster canal, which leads Pru back to her roots, as she visits the village of Near Sawrey, where her family lived during much of the war, and which had another very famous resident, Beatrix Potter.
