Critic Reviews for Justified: Season 1
All Critics (43) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (40) | Rotten (3)
Elmore Leonard, one of the show's executive producers and the author of the books in which the character of Raylan first appeared, is a master at mixing violent drama an incongruous humor.

It is lush with the beauty and weirdness of the folkloric backwoods, gritty with the coal dust of the miserable mines - a sublime pulp terrain.

Justified defies easy categorization or even explanation of its oddball appeal - a characteristic it shares, not coincidentally, with the crime fiction of Elmore Leonard, from which it is drawn.

Whatever you want to call it, Justified is a good show.

Justified hits the FX bullseyes - however many of them they might be.

A drama that curbs its enthusiasm for aggressively anti-hero males and instead gives viewers an easier to swallow blend of Southern Comfort and lemonade. It's a pleasure to drink to that.

Audience Reviews for Justified: Season 1
Timothy Olyphant stars in the FX original series Justified, a western style crime drama based on an Elmore Leonard short story. Season 1 follows a U.S. marshal named Raylan Givens who gets transferred to his hometown in Kentucky and is forced to confront his past, including his ex-wife, an former girlfriend, a criminal friend from his youth, and his estranged father. Olyphant gives an excellent performance and brings a lot of personality to the character of Givens. And Walton Goggins too really does an extraordinary job with his character. Additionally, the writing is incredibly strong; full of witty dialog and plot threads that build over multiple episodes, culminating in an intense and action-packed finale. A fresh and exciting series, Justified delivers an exceptional first season.

The first half of this season takes just way too much time with random cases that won't mean much in the end, making Justified another generic cop show. Better written than most, yes, but that first half just drags on forever and we don't get to know very well these characters. Fortunently, things pick up the pace on the second half, with a cohesive and interesting showdown that would only get better on the next seasons.
