Critic Consensus: Life is distinguished by star Damian Lewis' undeniable charisma, but let down by a rote procedural formula and one too many quirks for its Zen protagonist.

Damian Lewis, who uses a flawless American accent, makes Life worth a gander. And he is surrounded by a distinctive cast.

Rand Ravich and David Semel have breathed fresh life into the common-sounding concept of Life. They've done it by concocting interesting mysteries and offbeat characters - and, most of all, by filling Life with one remarkable actor after another.

Crews' idiosyncrasies are already tired by the end of the first episode.

Damian Lewis, who plays the quirky, fruit-loving Detective Charlie Crews, simply may not be enough to keep this show on the air.
Charlie is focused on enjoying the moment, every moment, which helps him gain witnesses' trust and glean suspects' motives. His quirky mannerisms are certainly a gimmick and, while amusing, Charlie isn't a believable character.
It's all in what Lewis brings to the man beneath the loopiness... It's a bravura performance, and sets Life apart from the police procedural pack. Because without Lewis, Life is a solid if mostly unremarkable program.
