Even when Little Fires isn't at its best, it's hard to tear your eyes away from its leads.

Little fires will quickly merge into an overwhelming flame, and even though this is the first scene of the series, Hulu's adaptation goes right ahead and burns itself out.
This one feels just unsteady enough that if it doesn't land on a coherent final chord, it won't hold together as a whole. The caliber of performers and the strength of the source material makes me optimistic.

There are fireworks here, but the peripheral characters and their unravelling lives are the ones that are more likely to stay with you.
...gets at the heart of America's denial of the importance of race and class in everyday life, with a lesser nod to how gender (particularly the inability to control one's fertility) shapes women's lives.
