This old-fashioned romantic comedy tries to pump itself up with risque dialogue and drunk jokes. Swoosie [Kurtz] plays a souse gamely, but just about everything is lame.
There is nothing about Love & Money that hasn't been done countless times before. It is a joy, however, to see it done so refreshingly.
This labored new sitcom was originally titled Love or Money, as in "Ugh, I wouldn't watch that thing again for love or money." The ampersand can't hurt, but it doesn't add much to the quality of the show.
"Love & Money" is almost a very funny show. But, somewhere along the line somebody decided not to throw caution to the wind and made what's essentially a pretty safe sitcom.
It's good for a few laughs, most of them attributable to [Swoosie] Kurtz, who effortlessly steals every moment of every scene as Effie Conklin, who makes her stuffy billionaire husband Nicholas the baronial butt of most of her jokes.
[Swoosie] Kurtz is a bubble-slurping delight as the highbrow lush from hell. But one inspired performance does not a show make.
