The world wouldn't necessarily be a better place without Malibu Shores, but it certainly isn't a better place with this new show.Not only is "Shores" lowbrow junk, it's pretentious lowbrow junk.
The show promises to be colorful, lustrous junk, an hour-long jellybean, but Russell and Lucca are bland.
Spelling took a look at the plainness of the San Fernando Valley, and the splendor of Malibu, and thought hmmm, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in oceanfront wrapping... It's an awful show.
Spelling is fond of noting that he comes from humble Texas origins but his current exalted status obviously affects his class consciousness. So his take on what constitutes a West Side Story-type conflict between young people is a little warped.
Malibu Shores is one more example of Spelling's engage-the-eyes-before-the-brain technique in action.
No, it's not a real estate development. It's a revoltin' development. It's an Aaron Spelling show even worse, by several degrees, than the usual Aaron Spelling show.
