But this first part of the season, at least, doesn't seize that opportunity to stand out. Like most teenagers, Runaways just wants to fit in.
The superpowers-as-coming-of-age-story works so well, and why Marvel's Runaways has so much promise despite a slow start.
It's off to an incredibly compelling start, thanks to Schwartz and Savage's confident storytelling, and should it keep moving forward at its current pace, it could become a truly addictive hit. As it is, it's one of Marvel's most promising series to date.
Runaways, the comic and the television series, are both built on the same, solid premise: What if your parents were actually as evil as you convinced yourself they were, when you were a teenager?
The great concept, solid cast, and propulsive mystery make this feel fresh and exciting.
While the music and sunny vibes are appropriate, the lethargic pacing and additional focus on the adults makes the series feel drawn out and suggests Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage misunderstood the appeal of the comic
