Critic Reviews for Monty: Season 1

Even though I've seen just one episode, I'm ready to deep-six another new Fox sitcom, Monty, a shrill and witless sendup of Rush Limbaugh. Henry Winkler is totally unbelievable and unfunny in the role of Monty, ultra-conservative host of a TV talk show.

There isn't one mildly funny line in the entire show, although the laugh-at-anything Fox audience would suggest otherwise.
This is essentially a contrived and scattered update of All in the Family with [Henry] Winkler as Archie and [China] Kantner as a more aggressive Meathead. But the conflict is there to keep the show rolling, if it can only discover a little cohesiveness.
[Henry] Winkler, looking vaguely cross-eyed and flapping his wings like a lost goose, seems at best pathetic, at worst pitiful.

If the premiere's moldiness is any indication, "Monty" could be the tamest series ever to debut on Fox.

Director James Burrows finds funny moments among the cliches, and pacing is good. [Henry] Winkler's Monty is a one-note character, though he gets off a couple of good, quick remarks.
