Tv Season Info

Season 1 of the NCIS spin-off centers on the lives of agents in the Naval Criminal Investigative Service's New Orleans field office as they probe crimes that affect military personnel in the Big Easy. The Crescent City branch is led by Senior Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula), a former Louisiana sheriff. The team's first case gets personal for Pride when the victim is identified as a man he mentored as a young gang member who became an upstanding petty officer. Later, Pride is assisted by his good friend Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) when an armored transport bus carrying Naval brig detainees crashes and four prisoners escape, including a black market broker who is one of the country's biggest national security threats. Pride turns to Gibbs for assistance when a case file needed for the investigation is full of redactions. Also, Pride becomes convinced his nemesis "Baitfish" has returned and, in an attempt to locate him, instructs the team to investigate crime scenes and chase leads from New Orleans to Charleston, S.C. Lucas Black, Zoe McLellan, CCH Pounder and Rob Kerkovich also star.

Bakula, Pounder -- as usual -- make the medicine go down easily. Otherwise, formulaic.

It's the strong sense of family within the team that's going to keep viewers coming back. These are nice people, and despite the unpleasantness of what they do, it's nice to spend time with them. And that is the key to a successful crime procedural.

There's a Crescent City flavor here. But in the larger picture, not much on this menu is unfamiliar.

The series shows off New Orleans and Bakula, who takes a pleasing, no-bull approach to the role.

NCIS: New Orleans is the equivalent of a hand-me-down jacket that's already been worn by two older brothers. By that point, it's stretched out, faded and threadbare.

I'm saying it's weirdly tone-deaf and dumb. It takes a lot of gall to turn one of America's best cities into window dressing.
