Critic Consensus: Peaky Blinders moves at its own speed, taking its time to create a portrait of post-war Britain that's as bloody and brutal as it is impressively immersive.

Critic Reviews for Peaky Blinders: Season 1

All Critics (15)

Peaky Blinders might just be worth the investment of a few stray hours. It's hardly revolutionary, but, like the industrial laborers in its 1919 Birmingham, England, setting, it gets the job done.

Peaky Blinders might find itself overwhelmed by a tide of historical baggage washing away any fine detail in the characterisations.

I chided David Harewood for not sounding fully Yank in the Homeland premiere, but then didn't notice his accent one way or the other in any subsequent episode because I was involved in the story.

Everything from the colours, sets, costumes, editing and cinematography is swoon-worthy right. Peaky Blinders takes the liberty to be mystical, lyrical and a visual treat.

Overall this was pacy, looked good and was fun to watch.

Undeniably entertaining, though more as a soap romp than a drama; I didn't feel quite as involved with the gun heist from the Birmingham Small Arms factory and the warring gangs as I think I was meant to be.

Audience Reviews for Peaky Blinders: Season 1

Despite the striking initial impact, once you start digging into Peaky Blinders you find that this is a show without much depth or sense of pace and character development. It feels overly long even with only 6 episode for it's season. The villains lack any discernible motivation, the brothers are a nuisance and the female characters are underused because that's where relies most of the interesting bits. Still, visually it looks impressive and Cillian Murphy proves again he can do pretty much anything and glue you to the screen thanks to his charisma and well-balanced role. The musical choices are another huge draw for me... It just doesn't work adding Arctic Monkeys and White Stripes to a 1920s series, it gets pretty silly at times.
