So John and Kayleigh drove off into the sunset together in Peter Kay's Car Share. Well, no, actually they didn't, because Peter Kay had a nifty little joke up his sleeve for the last scene of this funny and poignant, but never icky, finale.

Watching this bittersweet love story unfold as the two work through their initial clashes is the main draw of Car Share, but the decision to prioritise absurdist humour over sentimentality only increases the show's emotional heft.

Car Share will stand as one of the highest achievements of 21st century TV comedy, containing a combination of warmth and cleverness, social observation and romance, originality and nods to TV comedy history that only Kay could achieve.

All was eventually well, but the previous ending, the one that left things unsaid and messy, was more memorable, convincing, and, well, more Kay.
