Critic Consensus: Ruth Sheen's performance as young WPC Jane Tennison isn't enough to save a prequel that should have been on par with the original Prime Suspect series.

Critic Reviews for Prime Suspect: Tennison: Season 1
All Critics (16) | Top Critics (12) | Fresh (8) | Rotten (8)
Basically, Prime Suspect: Tennison answers a question - What was Jane like as a young cop? - that, given the reach of Mirren's work, no one was asking.

It knows what it's doing and where it's going.

Little is illuminated about Jane Tennison's early years, effectively negating its value as a prequel.

However we experience it, seeing young Tennison slowly develop into the woman she will eventually become is a rich treat.
Lord, it felt thin. In fact, the whole script felt thin, a weak and grainy Bisto poured over a dispiritingly small portion of egg and chips.
The miniseries ... never gets off the ground.
