Has familiar albeit excessive flaws: crucial characters are paper-thin in terms of background and motivation, the plot falters repeatedly and the final episode, after a ludicrous level of prevarication, resolves almost nothing.

It's not the cinematic TV of today's golden era but, as a teleseries, it's a step beyond the crass commercial sensibilities of something like Channel Nine's Underbelly franchise.

There's politics, passion and perversity aplenty in this ambitious, fast-moving drama. It's muscular, confronting and timely, and even if not everything in it quite works it is still one of the most invigorating pieces of television you will see all year.
