Tv Season Info

In Season 1 of "Speechless," the Dimeo family move to a new neighborhood so that their son, JJ (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy, can go to an inclusive school. With the help of his brother Ray (Mason Cook), sister Dylan (Kyla Kenedy) and assistant Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough), JJ negotiates the day-to-day difficulties of being a teenager---not ever letting his condition slow him down. Meanwhile, their mother Maya (Minnie Driver) walks the line between being overprotective and letting JJ thrive in his new environment; at the same time, dad Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) tries to bond with all his children.

Critic Reviews for Speechless: Season 1

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (26)

Speechless is all but guaranteed to be the Alphabet network's next comedic hit.

June 13, 2018 | Full Review…

Driver is impeccable in the role, and her comic timing is perfection, just as it was on About a Boy and Will & Grace. But the rest of the cast is impressive too, most notably Fowler.

September 19, 2016 | Full Review…

One of the best things that could happen to TV this fall would be for JJ DiMeo to become just another sitcom character.

September 9, 2016 | Full Review…

Speechless mixes humor with plenty of heart, much of the latter provided by Micah Fowler, an actor who in real life has cerebral palsy. He simply lights up the screen.

September 7, 2016 | Full Review…

The premise may sound more sad than funny, but fortunately, it's not.

September 22, 2016 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

Speechless exemplifies simple human decency without emphasizing it. Its world exists as ours should: unembellished. And in that, its powerful message could become extraordinary.

Audience Reviews for Speechless: Season 1

Speechless would have been innovative with its use of a disabled person maybe 40 years ago. Otherwise this sitcom has got obnoxious characters (stupid dad, bossy mum, rebellious disabled son, know it all daughter and pussy middle child). Unbearable, just unbearable.
