Critic Consensus: Despite the occasional suspense and intrigue, The Assets ultimately misses the mark with its unoriginal take on Cold War espionage and rather predictable ending.

Critic Reviews for The Assets: Season 1
All Critics (16) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (9) | Rotten (7)
The Assets just can't get untracked, lumbering through its first two hours without any sense of purpose, style or urgency.

Not a brilliant effort, but worth a look.

The real-life case was widely publicized enough that the outcome won't surprise most viewers. The opening scene, with Ames acting suspicious and guilty, acknowledges this. The point is the chase and to some extent the characters.

The Assets isn't flashy, but boy, is it effective.

It is suspenseful and tight, but not overwhelmingly violent, especially considering the subject matter.
The Assets reduces the complex world of espionage to laughably simplistic terms: "We are both spies, and I caught you spying!" bellows a KGB brute to a captured agent. Nyet thanks.
