The League: Season 1 (2009-2010)

Critic Consensus: Unabashedly raunchy and juvenile, The League's profane humor and sometimes mean-spirited cast will repel or attract viewers in equal measure.

Tv Season Info

Fantasy football is the playing field for an ensemble comedy about a disparate group of Chicago-based guys (and a gal) and their social misadventures. The popular pigskin pastime proves to be a thorn in one marriage in Series 1 as three-time league champ Pete (Mark Duplass) splits with his wife, while attorney Kevin (Stephen Rannazzisi) and his football-wise bride Jenny (Katie Aselton) prove that co-ed management of a team can work. Ruxin (Nick Kroll), another attorney, is the most fierce competitor of the group, while Kevin's slacker brother Taco (Jon Lajoie) and urban-slang-wielding surgeon Andre (Paul Scheer) fill out the league while often falling victim to foolish trade offers.

If you're going to do a show about fantasy football, then do it. Go big, or go home. As constructed, The League will leave no one happy.

This show's supposed to be the bawdier companion to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." It's bawdier all right, but not even remotely in the same comedy league.

With a few more original situational jokes and male dirty secrets, "The League'' wouldn't feel played-out so quickly.

FX has always had a good idea what viewers it's after, and the way TV works these days, a loyal cult can be enough. "The League" certainly has the goods to get one of those.
