Twin Peaks: Season 1 (1990)

Critic Consensus: Twin Peaks plays with TV conventions to deliver a beguiling -- and unsettling -- blend of seemingly disparate genres, adding up to an offbeat drama with a distinctly unique appeal.

All Critics (55) | Top Critics (30)

I can't wait to see the next episode of Twin Peaks. It's that good.

No sooner has the body been spotted than series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost start their serpentine retreat from TV tradition and TV cliché. Twin Peaks evolves into something quirky and mesmerizing, distinctly different.

The trouble is Lynch tries so hard to make his characters unusual that they all end up being alike. Twin Peaks becomes its own parody at times. That's not to say that it isn't worth viewing. It is. The film work is extraordinary and the scenery beautiful.

Twin Peaks is like the horrific, teasing fever nightmare that takes you to the head of the darkened staircase and throws you off, leaving you frozen in midflight at an exquisite peak of terror and wordless exhilaration.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Twin Peaks is its layering -- it definitely works as a hip look at middle-America bleakness, but it also functions as a fairly conventional soap opera. Lynch doesn't condescend to the genre.

Twin Peaks has an excellent cast, is suspenseful, and has been skillfully directed by Lynch.
