Vienna Blood was an oddity, but most oddities can still be intriguing. This raised unexceptionalism in drama to the level of... tempted to say art form but that would be inaccurate. Perhaps the level of pastime.
We heard about "the psychopathy of the criminal mind" and in due course Max's brilliant deductions revealed the murderer, but it was a long, slow slog.
With the two detectives hard to like, the 90-minute episode needed to be fast-paced to grip our attention. Despite a clever set-up, the storytelling sometimes dragged. We needed more dialogue and fewer long, contemplative silences.
There's an inauthentic, bloodless air to Vienna Blood, and its various parts never quite add up to an emotional whole.
There's also enough that's novel about the show's cerebral gumshoes to keep viewers rapt, and likely hoping for more.
I am more than ready to dismiss the primetime crime series as predictable, lightweight, uninspired and hackneyed.
