Weeds: Season 1 (2005)

Critic Consensus: Weeds is a cheeky comedy with dark, humorous , and sometimes outrageous moments centered around a talented female-led cast including Emmy winner Mary-Louise Parker.

Tv Season Info

The dark-humored dramedy about a pot-dealing suburban widow in California opens its inaugural season with Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) dealing with family issues and tangling with a rival pusher. Elsewhere, Nancy's business may go up in smoke when some of her clients obtain medical marijuana cards; Nancy's ne'er-do-well brother-in-law (Justin Kirk) unexpectedly arrives and hopes to crash at her house; and Nancy decides to open a faux bakery as a business front for her dealings. Also in the mix in Season 1: a drive-by shooting; a turf war; and a plan to deal to local college students.

The plots veer everywhere from marital betrayal and life-threatening illness to cruel pranks and stoned behavior, but Parker keeps it all grounded. Watch Weeds not for the humor, necessarily, but for her.

Light in tone, and it lays the groundwork for many of the themes and issues that the series explores in later seasons. The recent death of Nancy's husband lends some emotional weight to the episodes.
