Weeds: Season 5 (2009)

Critic Consensus: Weeds remains engaging with bursts of heart and wit, but loses narrative momentum as Nancy Botwin's motivations become increasingly obtuse.

Tv Season Info

The offbeat dramedy's fifth season kicks off with Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) pondering her fate and her relationship with Mexican crime boss Esteban (Demian Bichir). Seasonal dramas and developments include Andy, Doug and Silas contemplating a partnership in the cannabis biz; Nancy's older sister Jill (Jennifer Jason Leigh) arriving in town; and Silas and Doug trying to launch a medical-marijuana dispensary, though their plans are in danger of getting snuffed out by meddling Deputy C.P. Jones (Larry Joe Campbell). Later, Nancy discusses the possibility of an abortion with her obstetrician (Alanis Morissette); parenthood struggles lead Nancy and Andy to bond; and Celia is the target of a revenge plot.

This season feels unfocused for a variety of reasons, and it is the last featuring Elizabeth Perkins as Celia Hodes, one of the original cast/characters who had, by that point, been increasingly irrelevant.

I've never gotten wrapped up in the fascination with stoner movies and shows, but Weeds is a lot more than that.

What began as a clever but pat satire about a pot-dealing suburban mom is now closer to a Pedro Almodóvar movie: a delirious, always-surprising soap opera about a woman on the verge of a breakdown, jail time, assassination and motherhood.

The further Nancy Botwin sinks and propels herself into a dead-end life of isolated danger and highly organized crime, the more aware I become that I really dislike her; the more I need to see her fail to justify watching.

Ultimately, I respect the show for its boldness, and have enjoyed following the characters I've come to love down the rabbit hole.
