Weeds: Season 7 (2011)

Critic Consensus: Benefiting from a change of scenery and a renewed sense of purpose for Nancy Botwin, Weeds' seventh season overcomes its lack of narrative direction with solid characterization.

Tv Season Info

The dark comedy-drama's seventh season opens three years after pot-dealing Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) has done a stint in federal prison and has been paroled to a halfway house in New York City. However, Nancy fully looks for an opportunity to fire up her canni-business and reunite with the men in her life. Meanwhile, Silas attempts to land a job as a model; Doug is offered a dream job on Wall Street; Shane decides to give it the old college try and enrolls in classes; and Nancy squares off against her sister Jill (Jennifer Jason Leigh) in a custody battle. Later, Andy opens a bike shop while Silas sells pot out of the back room; Silas lands a love interest (Michelle Trachtenberg); and a police detective offers Shane an internship.

Nancy Botwin has moved to New York, and that may give her Showtime series Weeds some of the fresh energy the move was designed to provide.

The series has been an enormous success, but if it was wobbling off the tracks last year, it crashed and exploded off of them this season. Every episode felt like a complete mess. There was no continuity, no pacing.

It starts off strong and has a lot of promise, as the family has moved on and away; soon enough, though, they are all living together in New York and behaving unrealistically and negotiating unfunny storylines.

Weeds has never been a particularly realistic show, but some of the things that happen over the course of the season are so implausible that it doesn't even feel like the writers are trying anymore.

I've been really enjoying how drastically it overhauls itself so frequently and dramatically, to the point where the series feels like it keeps morphing into its own spinoff every year or two.
